Your website is your storefront.
Think about a storefront. If the windows are cracked, the paint on the door is chipping, the sidewalk is stained, it’s going to be harder for people to walk into your store. But nice things in the window, a clean welcoming entrance, and when people walk in it smells good and feels comfortable: that’s a good experience. Your website is that experience for every person who finds your business.
If your site embarrasses you, that’s the thing affecting you most. It reads as a reflection on your business, on whether people should take you seriously. The good news is it doesn’t have to be super fancy. It just has to work, and it has to relay the information you want to communicate in a professional way. Once it does, and people start complimenting you on it, that embarrassment is gone.
What makes a site work, versus just look nice.
Communication. What people want to hear, and what they need to hear to make a decision about using your services. The information has to be there, it has to be accurate, and the presentation has to be clean and professional. Looking fancy is secondary. Working is the point.
